Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, artist Korey Gulbrandson comes from a family of artists and inventors. Korey is a self-taught artist who works mainly with oil paints, as well as wax and acrylic paints to create pieces that are truly unique. He crafts his own wooden canvases and creates abstract, collage-like works by applying layers of wax and acrylic paint, working to emphasize contrasting elements, such as negative space verses form. Korey’s pieces are very sculptural, made so by the layers of gels and additives that are combined and subjected to heat, creating an exciting, surprising plane of texture and color. Korey was featured in the Winter 2012 edition of Portland’s AboutFace magazine.
